Our Shop

Smallfarms butcher’s shop is located in Hay-on-Wye. The shop is managed by Chris and Becky, they are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and are happy to help you with your meat requirements. Our butcher Chris, supplies organic lamb and beef direct from our own farms Ciliau and Lower Porthamel, as well as from other carefully chosen local suppliers.

Direct from our farms and local suppliers..


Smallfarms beef comes from our pure bred Hereford and North Devon Ruby Red cattle which we finish on grass and home grown cereals. The beef is hung for a minimum of 21 days. Hanging meat this long ensures that the meat is tender, succulent and has great flavour.


Reared on the clover and herb rich pastures of the Wye valley ensures that Smallfarms' lamb is sweet and tender. The lamb is matured to enhance its flavour before being cut by Chris. We also produce full flavoured mutton from sheep over two years old.


Our pork comes from Bwlchytrawspen Orchard Pork where Daniel Weale rears his Welsh pedigree pigs free range in his orchards. He is committed to producing naturally reared pork to the highest welfare standards, free from stress.

Poultry and Game

Smallfarms organic and free range chickens are  supplied by the Mee family which has been growing chickens at Springfield Poultry in Herefordshire for over 50 years. Game is available in season.

Smalfarms Butcher - Chris Elay

Chris is from a long line of butchers; his father worked in Harrods' Food Hall. At 13 he began work for a Tottenham butcher. Four years later he was working in Smithfield Market.  Chris has worked for some of London's most prestigious butchers, including Lidgate's of Holland Park, Macken Bros at Selfridges, and The Hampstead Butchers & Providore. He now brings his skills and experience to Smallfarms.

Shop Manager - Becky Hughes

Becky is the grand daughter of David Williams who was the Butcher at 8 Broad Street until he retired and Smallfarms took over the shop.
